He wanted a new system anyway he says so not such a big deal. With the cooking echo picnic starting tomorrow, I've been unpacking at well er... lightning speeds haha.. A bit more to go.. then we'll later add whatever we need like bookshelves to accomodate the 50-some boxes of books in the basement.. Thanks to our friends who helped us make the move, though I noticed my sewing machine cabinet was upstairs while my sewing machine was downstairs hehe.. We'll get there eventually, as far as that kind of organizing goes. We're both looking forward to the picnic, meanwhile knowing it's coming up has been a good excuse to test a number of Ithaca's restaurants. Reports to follow. FIDOGAZETTE Vol 6 No 13 Page 3 July 15, 2012 ----------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= C O L U M N S ================================================================= The Old School Toolbox By Richard Webb, 1:116/901 Connecting the Wetware, Part XI. A positive anarchy can work very well on a small scale, but the larger it gets the more you need to work at keeping everybody working together. A perfect example of this is google and its interaction with usenet. Before Google archived everything usenet there was dejanews, which they bought out. The folks running dejanews were diligent about limiting spam and keeping the spirit of cooperation alive. Google on the other hand is considered by many usenet regulars to be a bad usenet citizen, and poor neighbor. Those who use google groups to read usenet are always complaining about the high incidence of spam posts, google's constant tinkering with the user interface, etc. Not that google doesn't have its uses. If you want to look at archived posts that will have scrolled off most usenet servers google is the place to go. But, as a usenet neighbor they are considered anything but a good neighbor. Their interest is selling the advertising that goes along with your access. Hence, many popular news servers, albasani supernews and others are running what they call "clean feed" which does fairly well at blocking the spam. Some just go with the nuclear option, and nuke anything posted from google groups. So, we see that usenet has its own major difficulties with fostering that spirit of positive anarchy. After all, google does provide a valuable service to the net citizen with its archival facilities. Cutting google off completely can't be done, they'll get a feed somewhere by golly. Beside that, I don't know anybody who would really want usenet to lose those archives. When a subject comes up in many of the technical newsgroups that should be covered in a faq file but isn't posters are quick to suggest that the original poster consult the usenet archives via google. Without that archival capability usenet would be much the poorer. You win some, you lose some. Why did Dejanews seem to care, where google doesn't? The owners/operators of dejanews were usenet denizens from the early days. They'd gotten their usenet education by the old hands. These days, if you know where to look on usenet you can still get that cultural education, but you have to know where to look. Google, being populated by later comers, and younger folks didn't get that usenet indoctrination. After all, the web was the place they went on the net looking for information, not usenet. Fidonet with its weekly organ Fidonews would appear to have a distinct advantage there. After all, you don't have to subscribe to a certain echo to learn about the arcane workings of Fidonet. To learn about usenet you had to subscribe to certain newsgroups, which many didn't and don't. But still it's there. Again, Fidonews would appear to give Fidonet an edge when it comes to educating users and sysops. Usenet, as noted earlier had the advantage of all the system administrators and maintainers who were initiated to its culture before they became system administrators. they often learned about it in college. Fidonet on the other hand, as pointed out in earlier columns didn't have that advantage. But Fidonet had a publication that was supposed to be made available to users and sysops throughout the net. Again, contrast this with usenet where the administration happens totally behind the scenes and you had to know where to go to learn. The failure to resolve the disconnect between the technical and social workings of Fidonet over the years had, and has consequences. Though some would argue that it's too late to attempt resolution now a failure to do so could result in further decline. Newcomers and old hands alike still need to be informed and educated. Those looking at proposed technical standards need to be able to communicate with those impacted by them. Sociopolitical considerations will continue to bump up against the technical operation frequently. Here again, allow me to illustrate. If you are reading this article as an echomail message then you will note that there is a time stamp on the message. Every message has one, and whether you're using your favorite qwk reader or a sysop message editor, or the bbs software itself you'll see this time stamp. Yet that time stamp gives you plenty of information but not reliable information. Are you shaking your head at this one? Stay with me a minute. I live in the central time zone in North America. let us say that I compose an echomail message or usenet article in a few minutes. Daylight savings time is observed here. So, let us say that I enter that message at 9:34 A.M. local time here. Yet, for a variety of reasons my system clock is not set to local time, but coordinated universal time. So, that message would show a time stamp of May 3 at 14:34. There were two attempts at resolving this usually irrelevant but occasionally important issue by the standards folks, but both fell a bit short of the mark. The folks who developed software for file distribution had a bit better handle on it though. For file distribution, i.e. tic etc. Dos and os2 systems would set an environment variable tz, in format quite similar to the data format in the relevant control line for messages. The next logical step would have been for software used to create messages to actually look at this environment variable if set, and then depending on the vintage of the software write the tzutc or tzutcinfo kludge line to the message, enabling readers and bbs software to display time stamps with truly reliable information. The point I'm making here is that all these little parts of the organization work in apparent isolation from each other. Both Usenet and Fidonet have fallen short of the mark when it comes to disseminating key pieces of information which will enable their versions of positive anarchy to continue to function smoothly. There's always been an assumption that those who need it will know where to go to acquire it. Obviously this isn't true. Are there ways to remedy this situation? I believe there are, and i'll discuss them in future columns. FIDOGAZETTE Vol 6 No 13 Page 4 July 15, 2012 ----------------------------------------------------------------- BBBS News by Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net Rudi Timmermans has written a great addon for BBBS that lets you do nodelist lookups, plus a bit more! This is something that always drove me crazy about BBBS.. much as I love the software, it was just a pia to always have to manually look up the correct spelling of someone's name or his/her node number.. Rudi's program, Enhancement BBBS Module v2.1.0 takes care of nodelist lookups and much more. You can check your netmail, write a netmail, just do a nodelist lookup, add to an address book, or display the address book. When you select (W)rite a Netmail, you are given the option to type in what you would like to search for.. The keyword can be the first name, first and last name, partial or entire node number, town, or any keyword that will help your search. You can then type in or copy/paste the information right on the screen.. couldn't be easier! ============================================================================= Starting Nodelist lookup! If you are somewhere even close to Ithaca, NY, on that weekend, and think you might like to join us, you can just stop in for one day if you like, or get a room at one of the inns nearby if you'd like to stick around for the entire event :) While the name of this event is a "Cooking Echo Picnic", it is so much more than that :) We do typically go outside and party at times , but we also just go with the flow at the moment, depending on what people would like to do. There are excursions to local restaurants (some of them quite famous nationally, like the Moosewood Restaurant in Ithaca), and other sites of interest to people. Another big favorite will most likely be a visit to the Ithaca Farmers Market, which has been called a "Festival" with over 130 vendors. Plants, vegetables, meals, farmers who sell grass-fed beef, pork and lamb, and more are typically available. Craftsmen also bring their artistic wares, like artwork, jewelry, etc. At the house, we'll have stocked cupboards and most likely wine, beer and other beverages.. you can bring anything you want to share with people, as well. Our new house: 2682 Slaterville Road, Slaterville Springs, NY 14881 Phone number: 607-200-4074 Hope to see you there! If you have an idea for a column or a series of articles, please contact me :) New! Mailing-List subscriptions via www.filegate.net // lists / ?p=subscribe but of course you can always link into your uplink and use Tick or a tick compatible program. Where to Send Your Articles Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when there is a sparsity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :) Write an article! If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop your article off at: Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652 Binkp: 1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 telnet mailer: filegate.net If you are using routed Fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here. Send them instead direct to filegate.net. Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have one and send it along! Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though (something I'm typically guilty of (g)). To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis as above. Email address for submissions to Dr.Debug: To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to: drdebug @ filegate.net or post in the fidogazette echo! :) To send a listing to the FidoGazette bbslist, email your listing to: bbslist @ filegate.net or post it in the fidogazette echo!
